Mc Carthy Takes Donegal Title for Spartans
The Donegal 5km Championship Race took place in Letterkenny on Sunday and as is normally the case in all championship races, it was a highly competitive event. Run in near perfect conditions the race was won by Finn Valley’s Barry Harron on 15 mins 20 secs ahead of Inishowen AC’s evergreen Pauric Mc Kinney on 15 mins 31 secs and in third place Danny Mooney Letterkenny AC on 15mins 36 secs with City of Derry’s fast finishing Noel Logan who produced an excellent 15 mins 55 secs clocking to break the 16minute barrier and take sixth position. Next up was Gavin Stephenson who is still on the road to full recovery with a credible 18 mins 35 secs. The Donegal 5km V55 Championship title was at stake at this stage and interestingly both Joe Mc Carthy and Tirchonaill AC’s Richard Mc Carthy (brother of our current Chairman Declan Mc Carthy) were both in contention to take the title. The winner was decided by a sprint finish with Joe Mc Carthy finishing swiftly on 19 mins 16 secs to take the title, outsprinting the battling Richard Mc Carthy who clocked 19 mins 18 secs ahead of Finn Valley’s Mark Connolly who finished third on 21 mins. Unfortunately, City of Derry Spartans lacked numbers on the day and were unable to challenge for a team placing, as four athletes were required to make up each team. Full marks for our battling trio and a special thanks goes out to Team Coach Dara Furey for his support and advice on the day.
